Springsteen presents charity honor to Van Zandt

(AP) ? The night busted open in New York City as Bruce Springsteen and other Rock and Roll Hall of Famers helped Steven Van Zandt celebrate his Big Man of the Year award.

Darlene Love, Elvis Costello and Dion were among the performers Tuesday night at a rollicking benefit for Little Kids Rock, an initiative that rescues music education amid public school budget cuts.

Springsteen had some fun while presenting the award ? gleefully detailing their roommate days and Van Zandt's lack of housekeeping skills.

"What a liar," Van Zandt retorted with a grin.

Amid the musical blowout, Van Zandt and the other stars discussed the arts' role in fueling young minds and shaping character ? tasks accomplished through the thousands of musical instruments and the lessons made possible by Little Kids Rock.

Costello, before going onstage, waxed eloquently on the "mundane and magical" aspects of music, and its transformative effects. E Street drummer Max Weinberg reminisced about his high school marching band.

Van Zandt said in an interview with The Associated Press before the show that children might see a musical career as glamorous and fun ? "and it is."

But it also "requires a lot of work, just like any other craft. ... You need discipline and you need willpower and focus. And ... a lot of hours put into it," he said.

So people might be surprised to know that Van Zandt, while concentrating on a multitude of parallel careers, can go three years without playing a guitar, and then pick it up again in a week or two.

"When you've been playing so long, you don't really forget how to play," he said.

"Well, that's not a good example for the kids, though," he conceded, laughing. "That's just me. ... 'You kids: Don't do what I do ? do what I say.'"

The charity named the award for E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons in 2009, two years before he died.

Clemons' nephew, Jake, who now tours with E Street, lent heartfelt sax accompaniment to Little Kids Rock musicians from Franklin L. Williams Middle School in Jersey City, N.J.

Singer-guitarist Tom Morello, serving a blistering homage to Van Zandt's old anti-apartheid song, "Sun City," told the crowd how it helped stoke his own activism as a student at Harvard University.

Some bad-boy appeal came when rocker Jesse Malin climbed onto a table of people dining near the stage, singing as he traipsed in sneakers amid stemware on the tablecloth.

Springsteen sang a duet with Little Steven on the rousing Van Zandt song, "Until the Good is Gone."

Then another pride of Jersey, Southside Johnny, made it a trio for the nostalgic "It's Been a Long Time."

All the performers packed the stage for the aptly chosen finale, "I Don't Want to Go Home."

Besides working with Springsteen and E Street, and camping it up in mobster roles ? his most recent on the Netflix show "Lilyhammer" ? Van Zandt is a record and television producer, radio host, songwriter and arranger, and oversees two satellite channels.

The self-educated music historian is also chairman of the Rock and Roll Forever Foundation, which is developing curriculum for schools. Not bad for a guy who endured his own school days as a self-described "freak," ''misfit" and "outcast."

"That was particular to my generation," he said. Now, being a musician is "acceptable. ... But it wasn't so respectable in the 60s."

In the long run, though, Van Zandt said music saved his life ? and he wants to return the favor. "It's why I support Little Kids Rock."

Meningitis outbreak deaths rise to 19

NEW YORK (AP) ? Four more people have died in the national meningitis outbreak, bringing the death toll to 19, health officials said Wednesday.

The deaths are among the 247 people in 15 states sickened in the outbreak. They all received shots of an apparently contaminated steroid medication made by a Massachusetts specialty pharmacy.

Most of the patients contracted a rare fungal form of meningitis, after getting the shots for back pain over the past few months. Two developed infections from joint injections.

Of the latest deaths, two were in Tennessee and one each was reported in Florida and in Virginia, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Wednesday. That brings deaths to eight in Tennessee; three in Florida and Michigan, two in Indiana and Virginia, and one in Maryland.

Test results so far show infections with three kinds of fungus, most of them a form of black mold, the CDC said. Of 42 patients, 40 were infected with Exserohilum fungus. The others were infected with Aspergillus or Cladosporium. All are treated with the same anti-fungal medications.

Three lots of the suspect steroid were recalled last month by the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass. All the illnesses have been traced to one of those lots.

Food and Drug Administration officials last week said they found fungus in 50 vials of the preservative-free steroid called methylprednisolone acetate. However, they have not said what kind of fungus they detected.

On Monday, FDA officials said they are investigating two more drugs made by New England Compounding ? another steroid and a solution used during heart surgery. Initially, the FDA said two heart transplant patients who got the heart solution developed fungal infections but later said one case involved a solution made by another company. They also have cautioned there could be other explanations for the infections.

Real Money Slingo Advance - Online Gambling News

Peter Amsel
October 17, 2012

slingo-advance-hollywood-pokerWith an aim toward fulfilling promises made this April, social games developer Slingo will make the hyperspace jump from virtual credits to real-money play with Slingo Advance. The new product, which will feature Slingo?s traditional mix of bingo, slots and ?advance social dynamics,? is slated to go live in regulated markets sometime before the year is done. Slingo CEO Rich Roberts told eGamingReview that he was attending the European iGaming Congress in order to meet with two suppliers interested in launching Slingo Advance on their platforms, but just as in April, Roberts isn?t tipping his hand as to the identities of that dynamic duo. (In April, those two were believed to be Playtech and GTECH.) Slingo first licensed its free-play offering to Zynga in February.

Speaking of Zynga, former Zynga Poker designer Shawn Carnes has landed a new gig with Plaor, the social game developers behind Hollywood Poker. The real-money version of that site crapped out in June ? player deposits were transferred intact to Ongame skin RedKings Poker ? but has since reinvented itself as a social poker app that lets you match your poker prowess against film stars like Kevin Pollak, who made a respectable showing in this year?s World Series of Poker.

Irish social games developer OteetO launched Texas Ask?Em Poker on Facebook in May, and is about to release a mobile version for iPhone. In case you were wondering, the ?ask?em? tweak involves players being dealt two hole cards, then being challenged to answer a multiple-choice question faster than your opponent(s). The fastest correct answer results in that player receiving a slightly more favorable set of hole cards than his or her opponents, but you still have to play poker well to win. The iPhone launch will take place at this week?s Dublin Web Summit.

Online social poker sites in South Korea are grappling with how to deal with the phenomenon of ?moneymen? ? players paid by other, less talented and more degenerate players who need someone to chip dump them more than the 300k ?points? they?re legally allowed to purchase per month. According to Korea Joongang Daily, an illegal economy has sprung up comprising some 1,000 moneymen, some of which are making out like, er, bandits. According to one such moneyman, ?even a beginner in this job could easily earn around 2m won (US $1,800) a month. I have seen cases in which some made over 100m won ($90.5k) a year.? Notices advertising moneyman training sites have even sprung up on South Korean internet forums. Fair warning: chip-dumping ? even the virtual kind ? is illegal, with transgressors facing a possible jail sentence. And not in Zynga?s PrisonVille, neither.

Squash Video Tips

Squash Video Tips

Squash that Bug

We can all use some help when it comes to improving our squash game, whether you pay for coaching, watch the good players, or just heaps of practice.

I have found a valuable source of free coaching in the wealth of squash video tips that can be found on the internet. They are usually brief and have a narrow focus, and if you have identified a problem in your game you will probably find a coaching video to help you sort it out. Just search under play squash video, or squash video tips, or anything similar, and take your pick.

For instance, I had developed the terrible habit of always playing a boast shot from the back corners because it was hard for me to play a drive shot from there. Opponents are quick to recognize this habit, so they play to the back corner. I play the boast on schedule and there they sit at the front of the court with me floundering at the back, to play the simplest of drop shots and win the rally.

What's the Answer?

A quick search and I found what I was looking for. As the best answers usually are, the solution was simple. Use an almost vertical back-swing and that made all the difference. A short practice session and suddenly I had a choice of shots - the boast or the drive. As the two shots finish at opposite corners of the court the opponent has to try to cover both, which is nowhere near as easy for him.

If I notice fellow players exhibiting various little weaknesses in their game, my initial response is to try and exploit them to my advantage. Winners are grinners! But because of the teaching environment that surrounds the game of squash, I try to locate a squash video tip that addresses the problem and suggest (tactfully of course) that they watch the video. Some do and some don't, but for those that take the trouble the results are usually quite visible.

It is rather gratifying to see progress made like this, but my favorite moment was when I heard a player passing on the same advice to a lower graded player and crediting me as the source. That was nice, but we all know that I wasn't really the source - it wasn't even the player who had given me the same advice previously, but someone somewhere back up the line of good players helping newbies. It's just that sort of sport.
