Grand Traditions Celebrated at Homecoming - Wabash College ...

All of Wabash came together Friday night to celebrate the College?s grandest traditions ? the Glee Club, Homecoming, brotherhood, and philanthropy ? and when the evening concluded, the College had successfully concluded the Challenge of Excellence campaign by topping $68 million.

Nearly 400 alumni, friends, students, faculty, and staff gathered to celebrate the 120th?anniversary of the Glee Club?s founding on the College?s 100th?Homecoming weekend.

President Pat WhiteThe centerpiece of the evening was the announcement of the final total for the Challenge of Excellence campaign. Formally begun in October 2010, the campaign?s goal was $60 million by the end of 2013. Rising to the Challenge in typical Wabash fashion, the goal was exceeded a full year ahead of schedule.

?We knew in our heart of hearts that we could call on all of Wabash to rise to the need, to respond to the call, and reach higher for the good of the College,? said President Patrick White. ?Wabash Always Fights and always means always. In good times and in bad, you and your families and Wabash men from literally around the globe, have stepped up and said, ??My College needs me.? And out of gratitude, out of love, out of loyalty and the fine gentlemanly virtue of caring for the generations who will come after you, you have stepped up. And your generosity will make an enormous difference in the lives of Wabash men for years to come.?

President White also paid tribute to the Challenge of Excellence co-chairs, Allan Anderson ?65 and Ted Grossnickle ?73, both members of the Board of Trustees who led a vast and talented volunteer committee and seasoned Advancement staff in surpassing the goal ahead of schedule.

Ted Grossnickle ?73?I often use the word ?investment? in describing charitable contributions and philanthropy,? Grossnickle said. ?You, our graduates and friends, are investors in the ongoing success of Wabash College. And, you are also investing in our future. Without you, and the generations before you, the education of young Wabash men and the work of our faculty, would not happen? The Challenge of Excellence was accomplished because of people. The fact that we, as a community, pulled together in a tough time economically, is a testament to the people associated with the College. For Wabash to have done this, not only on time but ahead of time, and exceeding our goal, is even more special.?

Leading the drive to the Challenge?s successful conclusion were Alison Kothe and Tom Runge ?71 of the Advancement Office. Kothe, senior director of development, and Runge, senior director of alumni and parent programs, accelerated the Challenge of Excellence beginning late fall of 2011.

Allan Anderson ?65?The relationships that exist between our students, the relationships that exist between our faculty and students, and the relationship between our faculty and their scholarship are at the very core of Wabash?s mission,? Anderson said. ?The completion of the Challenge of Excellence supports our core mission for today?s students and faculty, but it also allows for the funding of new initiatives to lead the College forward.?

Seven decades of Glee Club members united in song to entertain the crowd, giving a preview of Saturday?s 7:30 p.m. Homecoming Concert in Salter Concert Hall.

Club Director, Dr. Richard Bowen, directed the nearly 100-voice strong Alumni Glee Club for one number, while alumnus Eric Stark ?88, who is choral director and professor of music at Butler University, led the group in a rousing rendition of Old King Cole.

Cambell Robbins ?09Former Club member Campbell Robbins ?09 introduced a video that charted the Glee Club?s glorious history of song by reflecting on his own experiences in the Glee Club ? the camaraderie and travel. Robbins said the strong bonds he formed with other Wabash men in the Club were among his fondest memories, and the audience roared in laughter as he described the Club?s travels through Europe.

Robbins followed in his father Clay's footsteps to Wabash and the Glee Club, and both of his younger brothers, Peter and Luke, were members of the Glee Club.

Jim Kilbane ?84, a Hall of Fame linebacker on the football team during his time at Wabash, paid tribute to Wabash?s proud Homecoming traditions ? Chapel Sing, decorations, bon fires, Alumni Chapel, and the Homecoming football game.

Jim Kilbane ?84Kilbane talked about the bonds of friendship that extended all across campus ? from the football field to the Sphinx Club to Glee Club. He also honored the memory of his Wabash mentors and friends ? Dave Harvey ?77, Evan Sobecki ?10, Jeff McLochlin ?83, Bill and Ginny Hays, and Fran and Barney Hollett.

Kilbane, too, introduced a video history that traced the history of Homecoming at Wabash to its roots in 1912.

Both videos were produced by Adam Bowen of the Wabash Media Center and researched by Archivist Beth Swift.

?On this festive night as we celebrate 180 years of Wabash history, of 100 years of Homecoming, and the 120-year tradition of the Glee Club, we best honor the past of Wabash when we look to our future,? concluded President White.

Kevin Clifford, Allan Anderson, Pat White, Steve Bowen, and Ted Grossnickle toast the success of the campaign."At Wabash, no one walks the road to excellence alone. Each young man at Wabash who has the courage to say, ?I will take my life seriously; I will be a hero in my own story,? does so because you are all behind him and beside him. And tonight as we celebrate and as we look ahead let us remember: We do not yet know how great this College can be.? We do not know what excellence we can achieve together. The Challenge of Excellence campaign has concluded in proud and grand fashion, but the true Challenge of Excellence of Wabash continues forever.?

    Movie Review: 'Looper' | Movies & TV | Arts & Entertainment | Epoch ...

    Rian Johnson?s instant classic

    Looper

    Director: Rian Johnson
Cast: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt
    Running Time: 118 minutes
    Rating: R

Imagine flowing through life, day after day inching ever closer to the inevitable?your own death. Sounds familiar right? Well, what if the degree of which was a bit closer than an estimated lifespan and more like a downright certainty. Add some sci-fi, time travel, supernormal telekinetic elements, and enter ? Looper.

If you haven?t heard the name Rian Johnson before, then the name will certainly stick from this day forward. Johnson returns as director for his third and highest-profile film. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a hired gun who takes out people sent from the future to the past to erase them from history?a looper.

Loopers are paid well and enjoy life. However, the catch is that one day somewhere down the line, their future selves are sent back and they ?close the loop? by killing their elder versions.

The balance of time in between is left for them to enjoy their golden-parachute retirement?see the parallel?

    \>");

Sounds like an exceptionally interesting and in-depth sci-fi film. But these elements are readily known and understood in the first 5 minutes.

Yes, it gets deeper and more interesting!

As with most sci-fi films, Looper becomes a parallel of life itself.

The critically acclaimed Blade Runner focused on the nature of questioning our own consciousness?the ?Am I a replicant?? paradigm. This became the foundation of mainstream philosophical questions in most sci-fi films over the last 20 to 30 years.

Some allusions to Blade Runner and the most recent ?Runner? of our time, Matrix, can be made. However, if the former was more sci-fi drama, and the latter more sci-fi action, then Looper is certainly more dramatic and more action-oriented.

Director Johnson drives the audience on an emotional and psychological journey through the vehicle of the four central characters: Joe (Gordon-Levitt) the looper, Joe?s elder self (Bruce Willis), Sara (Emily Blunt), Levitt?s present day love interest, and her son Cid (Pierce Gagnon).

The future/elder version of Joe, played by Willis, is left to possibly see the demise of the life he created and lived, and fights to ensure its existence in time.

Sara, the single mother, longs to ensure the safety of her high-functioning, perceptive, and powerful son.

Cid must deal with the nature of the world he lives in, where good and evil are displayed before him at different turns?shaping the destined personality and character he is to become.

And Joe?a selfish, hedonistic, well-dressed, late-20s-something thug?must decide to live his life through an inevitable pace and known outcome or possibly change his own fate.

Sounds clich?d, but Looper is anything but.

Johnson helps to punctuate this element of selfishness that is so pervasive in current times, bring the audience to the proverbial Road Not Taken, and answer the question of what we are willing to sacrifice for our own happiness while balancing the well-being of others.

A thoroughly entertaining sci-fi film with multiple layers, if you catch the hook on this ?loop,? it is sure to be a classic.
