Low-Carb, Low-Fat Diets May Each Help the Heart

WEDNESDAY, March 14 (HealthDay News) -- Using either a low-carbohydrate or low-fat diet to shed belly fat can improve blood vessel function, researchers say.

The study included 60 women and men who weighed 215 pounds on average and were assigned to either low-carb or low-fat diets that provided a similar amount of calories each day. The participants also did moderate exercise.

At the start and end of the six-month study, the researchers assessed the function of the participants' blood vessels.

During the study, people on the low-carb diet lost an average of 28.9 pounds and those on the low-fat diet lost an average of 18.7 pounds. The more belly fat a person lost, the better their arteries were able to expand when necessary, allowing blood to flow more freely.

"Our study demonstrated that the amount of improvement in the vessels was directly linked to how much central, or belly, fat the individuals lost, regardless of which diet they were on," lead investigator Kerry Stewart, a professor of medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and director of clinical and research exercise physiology at the Johns Hopkins Heart and Vascular Institute, said in a Hopkins news release.

"This is important since there have been concerns that a low-carb diet, which means eating more fat, may have a harmful effect on cardiovascular health. These results showed no harmful effects from the low-carb diet," Stewart noted.

The study was slated for presentation Tuesday at the American Heart Association scientific meeting in San Diego.

Being overweight increases the risk for cardiovascular disease, especially if belly fat accumulates above the waist.

Data and conclusions presented at medical meetings should be considered preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed medical journal.

Obama: Killing Afghans as serious as killing Americans

The Obama administration is in a difficult position after the latest incidents in Afghanistan. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

?WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Tuesday said he viewed the killing of 16 Afghan civilians, allegedly?by a U.S. soldier, as seriously as if those killed had been Americans.

"The U.S. takes this as seriously as if it were our own citizens and our own children who were murdered," Obama said at the White House.

Obama said he was directing the Pentagon to do a very thorough investigation of the weekend killings. He said the inquiry would "follow the facts" wherever they lead, and that anyone found responsible would be prosecuted fully. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has said the death penalty is possible if the soldier is convicted.

Obama's message was aimed at Afghans and at Americans for whom the killings were a reminder that tens of thousands of U.S. forces are fighting in Afghanistan more than 10 years after the war began.

Obama insisted that the killings will not change U.S. commitment to finishing the job in Afghanistan, but he was clearly trying to reassure Americans that he will close out the war.

"Make no mistake, we have a strategy that will allow us to responsibly wind down this war," Obama said.

"We're steadily transitioning to the Afghans who are moving into the lead. And that's going to allow us to bring our troops home."

He repeated the timetable for bringing forces home that he had already laid out: 23,000 troops by the end of this summer, on top of 10,000 removed last year. He did not give a schedule for withdrawal of the approximately 68,000 U.S. forces that will remain in Afghanistan at the end of this year.

The U.S. and NATO allies agreed more than a year ago to leave forces in Afghanistan through 2014. There is political pressure in Europe, and increasingly in the United States, to speed up that deadline.

"There's no question that we face a difficult challenge in Afghanistan, but I am confident that we can continue the work of meeting our objectives, protecting our country and responsibly bringing this war to a close," Obama said.

Earlier Tuesday thousands of people took to the streets in eastern Afghanistan to protest the killings, burning an effigy of Obama and calling for the killer to be tried in Afghanistan.

Demonstrators in the city of Jalalabad chanted "Death to America -- Death to Obama" and blocked the main highway to Afghanistan's capital, Kabul,?Britain's Daily Telegraph reported.

"Jihad (holy war) is the only way to get the invading Americans out of?Afghanistan," one banner read, according to the newspaper.

The demonstrators also demanded that President Hamid Karzai reject plans to sign a strategic pact with Washington that would allow U.S. advisers and possibly special forces to remain beyond a 2014 deadline for foreign combat troops to leave Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, militants attacked an Afghan?government delegation that was visiting the site of the killings, the BBC reported.

"I?can confirm that the Taliban have launched an attack from several directions against a government delegation,"?a senior official told the BBC. "At this stage, our forces are returning fire.''

Nine children and three women were among those killed in the massacre. According to reports, a 38-year-old staff sergeant had left his base in Panjwai district early on Sunday and broke into the victim's homes. Some of the bodies were burned.

The recent killings have brought great sadness to Afghanistan, and Afghan President Hamid Karzai has called the killings 'unforgiveable.' NBC's Atia Abawi reports.

The soldier?had no history of behavioral problems but had been treated for traumatic brain injury after a previous deployment to Iraq, senior U.S. defense officials told NBC News.

U.S. officials rushed to draw a line between the shooting over the weekend and ongoing efforts of a U.S. force of around 90,000, and have been bracing themselves for reprisals as Afghans weary of the decade-old Western military presence vent their anger.

The Afghan Taliban threatened on Tuesday to behead U.S. troops in revenge for the massacre.

"The Islamic Emirate once again warns the American animals that the mujahedeen will avenge them, and with the help of Allah will kill and behead your sadistic murderous soldiers," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said in an emailed statement, using the term with which the Islamist group describes itself.

Billions in cash flees Afghanistan, economy threatened

KABUL (Reuters) - Wealthy Afghans are carrying about $8 billion -- almost double the state budget -- in suitcases out of the country each year, an amount likely to rise as the exit of foreign troops nears and threatening to ruin the fragile economy, a senior official said.

In an interview with Reuters, deputy central bank governor Khan Afzal Hadawal said confidence in the economy had eroded to such a degree over more than a decade of war that cash was pouring out of Afghanistan in suitcases and carry-on bags, taken to safe havens in Dubai and elsewhere.

Sitting in his office in the run-down Kabul central bank building, Hadawal put little faith in a the government's recently imposed $20,000 limit on cash being taken out.

"The measures will not stop the money from going out," he said. "We definitely prefer them to invest inside the country. Everything depends on security. If it doesn't improve, nobody will invest their money where there is no security."

U.S. plans to wind down the war make officials like Hadawal nervous. The Americans want to replace large combat formations with advisers, and perhaps special forces, as foreign combat troops prepare to withdraw at the end of 2014.

It will then be up to ill-equipped Afghan forces to take control of security.

If they fail, Afghanistan could again face civil war and prolonged instability, making foreign investors and wealthy Afghans even more reluctant to keep any money in what is already one of the world's most turbulent nations.

Asked if 2014 was too soon for foreign combat troops to head home, Hadawal said: "There are a lot of things that need to be done. We still need foreign assistance."

SUITCASES WITH $8 BILLION IN CASH

Hadawal estimated that up to $8 billion in cash leaves Afghanistan's airports every year, half of it from Kabul alone.

"The $8 billion being taken out is double the total assets of the (central) bank," said Hadawal. It is also nearly double the size of last year's national budget.

A U.S. government audit report last year found it was almost impossible to track where much of the billions of dollars spent on security and development projects in the last decade had gone given the country's dysfunctional financial tracking system and poor bank oversight.

Afghans have for years locked their wealth in overseas banks and property, with Dubai and its man-made Palm Jumeirah island favored locations. Some $8 billion alone is thought to be stashed away in the Arab emirate.

Afghanistan's economy is heavily dependent on foreign aid and the proceeds from being the world's largest producer opium producer.

In 2009, ahead of the last Afghan election, millions of dollars -- much of it of questionable origin -- made its way out of the country in suitcases and even on pallets loaded into aircraft, according to police at Kabul's main airport.

Former vice president Zia Masood was stopped entering Dubai carrying cash worth $52 million but released without question, according to a cable from the U.S. embassy in Kabul that appeared later on the website Wikileaks.

The outflows, and an expected sharp drop in foreign aid, the backbone of Afghanistan's budget, could take a heavy toll on the Afghan economy, said Hadawal.

U.S. economic and humanitarian aid to Afghanistan fell from $4.1 billion in 2010 to $2.5 billion in 2011. U.S. aid will be even lower this year as Washington shifts to sustainability projects, which they say require lower levels of funding.

The eventual withdrawal of foreign forces, whose hard currency trickles into the economy, could also hurt finances.

"At this stage you see we are dependent on foreign aid. If it stops and security does not improve, the economy will not be sustainable," said Hadawal.

"If security remains the same, we can't even put an ATM out in the provinces because we fear that someone will blow it up and take the money."

'Kony 2012' Video Went Viral With Rihanna's Help

At noon Pacific time last Monday, Jedidiah Jenkins, a member of the nonprofit organization Invisible Children's inner circle, saw the group's 278th YouTube video uploaded and wasn't sure what to expect. Jenkins had written the script to the film, the 30-minute documentary "Kony 2012," about the Ugandan warlord Joseph Kony, and it had been a grind.

"It was really the hardest movie we've ever made" in the nearly decade-long history of the group, he told MTV News in a phone interview from Los Angeles.

The film is now the most viral video ever, with more than 70 million views on YouTube alone in the video's first six days thanks in no small part to an army of young supporters who flexed their power by using social media to drive celebrities and friends to watch and share the video.

Creating online content and distributing it with social media was nothing new for Invisible Children — the group already had 450,000 Facebook friends the night before the video was posted and they've used YouTube to share videos about their cause since 2006 — but the way this video spread was something the group could never have planned.

Jenkins said the group posted the video at noon on Monday and that evening hosted a screening at Creative Artists Agency in Los Angeles with celebrities Kristen Bell and Jason Bateman, who took to Twitter at 9:42 p.m. immediately after watching the film.

"We had a strategy to screen it at CAA with the few celebrities we know, get them in the room, make them watch it," Jenkins said. Within the 24 hours that followed, celebrities including comedian Kelly Oxford, Ryan Seacrest, Diddy, Justin Bieber, Oprah and Steve Carrell had tweeted about the video after being notified about it by their fans thanks to a call-to-action in the documentary. Soon enough, Jenkins' phone was ringing off the hook, including a call from Rihanna.

"She had been tweeted by her fans en masse, saying you're in this video," Jenkins recalled. "She just kind of responded and clicked on the link that one of her fans followed. It blew her mind. She tweeted it immediately. One of her music video directors, Anthony Mandler, actually went to Uganda with me to see our programs on the ground in November."

"Anthony texted her. They conference called me at 11 at night and I missed the call twice, because I was at a late dinner. Three calls in a row means it's an emergency," so Jenkins picked up.

"Anthony said, 'Jed, I have Rihanna on the line. She wants to talk to you.' " Jenkins recalled the 24-year-old singer saying, "I've never been moved like this, I've never been involved. I want to go big. I want to get involved. I want this to be my thing and I want to blow this up. I want to get kids involved. I'm just responding to my fans. They're so moved by this."

Wherever you land in the debate over the organization's tactics and the film's accuracy, "Kony 2012" is undeniably a social media phenomenon made possible by support from celebrities encouraged to get involved by their young fans. Even CNN's Piers Morgan admitted he first heard about the movement from his 14-year-old son.

As of press time, Invisible Children has nearly 3 million likes on Facebook, and the question remains: What's next for this enormous group of engaged and active young people when so many of their peers are apathetic? Jenkins said the group is considering participating a voter-registration drive as the 2012 election approaches. But he admitted that first he and his colleagues have to get caught up.

"We couldn't have ever, ever imagined that this would be the fastest viral movement in history. We are dealing with an unprecedented amount of attention. It's a huge amount of responsibility. It's exhausting. We're excited for the challenge, but it's intimidating too."

Futures Slip on Weak Chinese Economic Data; Zoll Medical, Tudou, and Youku In Focus

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is headed toward a weak start this Monday morning, as Wall Street digests weak Chinese economic data released over the weekend. Additionally, Greece will be back in the headlines again today, as a Euro-zone meeting is slated for later this morning to work on finalizing the country?s debt swap and bailout funds.

Against this backdrop, futures on the DJIA Mini are trading about 3 points below fair value, while the S&P 500 Index (SPX) and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQ) are trading 1.25 points and 3.9 points below fair value, respectively.

In equity news, the shares of Zoll Medical (ZOLL) have surged more than 24% in pre-market trading. Investors are responding to Asahi Kasei?s agreement to purchase ZOLL for $93 per share, or roughly $2.21 billion. Asahi has set a tender offer for ZOLL shares that will begin in 10 trading days and remain open for 20 The Tokyo-based maker of chemicals, housing materials and synthetic fibers said it will buy Massachusetts-based Zoll Medical for $93 per share in a tender offer set to start within 10 working days. The offer will remain open for a minimum of 20 business days, the company said.

Also in merger and acquisition news, shares of China?s Tudou Holdings (TUDO) have rocketed nearly 200% higher in pre-market trading, after the online video company?s competitor Youku (YOKU) said it would buy the company in an all-stock deal. YOKU shares have jumped more than 17% on the news.

The earnings calendar is light, with only FuelCell Energy (FCEL), Silver Standard (SSRI), and Urban Outfitters (URBN) among today?s highlighted company?s releasing their quarterly reports.

Options activity was brisk heading into the weekend on Friday, with 2.28 million calls and 2.05 million puts changing hands on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE). Overall, the CBOE put/call volume ratio arrived at 0.90, well below the ratio?s 10-day (0.95) and 20-day (0.95) moving averages.

Call volume crept higher among index traders, with the CBOE index put/call volume ratio falling to 1.16 from Thursday?s perch at 1.28. However, puts were the contract of the day for VIX traders. Specifically, the CBOE Market Volatility Index (VIX) put/call volume ratio soared 77% to 1.38 ? its highest reading in more than three months. That said, a spike in VIX puts shouldn?t be too surprising, given that the index has plunged more than 18% since last Tuesday.

DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) - Cliff Lee's first spring start went about as well as it could have.

He gave up two hits in two innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0 Tuesday, putting to rest any concerns about an abdominal strain that briefly set him back at beginning of training camp.

"I was just looking to get out of there healthy and feeling good," he said after facing eight batters. "I would have liked to locate better but it was definitely a positive, a step in the right direction."

Lee had a walk and a strikeout and got a double-play grounder off the bat of Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista

"He was all right," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "He got `em out, didn't he?"

Ricky Romero, No. 1 in the Blue Jays starting rotation, matched Lee's two shutout innings, getting six groundball outs and giving up one hit, Ty Wigginton's leadoff double in the second.

"I made some good pitches," Romero said. "I was a little off at the beginning but I felt great. I was working on my fastball, working to keep it down. The changeup is a little off but other than that, the cutters in the second inning were good pitches."

Shane Victorino drove in two of Philadelphia's four runs in the second inning. Blue Jays reliever Rick VandenHurk, a February free-agent signee, gave up a leadoff single to Carlos Ruiz and one-out walks to Jimmy Rollins and Juan Pierre before Victorino singled up the middle. Wigginton's sacrifice fly and John Mayberry Jr.'s single each drove in a run.

Phillies outfielder Scott Podsednik, a 10-year major leaguer who missed the 2011 season with plantar fasciitis, replaced Victorino in centerfield in the fifth inning and doubled in two at-bats.

"I feel great. I've got my health back, I've got myself physically in the condition I need to be in to play," Podsednik said. "So far so good."

The injury was first diagnosed in September 2010. He started last year with the Blue Jays, spent time in the minors, was released last May by Toronto and signed a minor-league contract with the Phillies. He played just 14 Triple-A games and signed another minor-league contract in November.

"Very frustrating," he said. "It was probably one of the worst years in my big-league career. For a guy who makes his money with his feet, to have two jacked-up feet, it's no fun."
