NFL Injury News: Darren McFadden and the Biggest Injuries from Week 9

There was no shortage of injuries in Week 9 of the 2012 season, as many top players were hurt and had to leave their respective games.?

The injury bug hasn't been too kind to many teams this season, as we've seen some top names fall and some former unknowns have stepped up to take their places.

While it's far too early to tell how long these players will be out, or if they'll miss any time at all, each of these players are certainly worth keeping an eye on as they're important components to their teams.

Let's take a look at the biggest injury storylines to come out of Week 9.

?

Darren McFadden, RB, Oakland Raiders

The Oakland Raiders are no strangers to McFadden injury problems, and it's looking like their star running back could miss some time after leaving Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a leg injury, according to FOX Sports.

The Raiders' leading rusher is arguably the most important player in their offense, and his teammates will have to step up if Oakland is going to rebound from their loss on Sunday.

McFadden has missed a total of 19 games in his four seasons with a plethora of injuries.

?

Jordy Nelson, WR, Green Bay Packers

Packers fans received some good news heading into Sunday's game when they heard receiver Jordy Nelson would play despite a hamstring injury, but it didn't take long for that to change.

The Green Bay wideout left in the first quarter with a right ankle injury, according to Brian McIntyre of Yahoo! Sports.

With Greg Jennings already having missed most of the season so far, this news can't be good for Aaron Rodgers and company. Though, one silver lining is that they're heading into their bye week and have plenty of time to get Nelson back to good health.

?

Antonio Brown, WR, Pittsburgh Steelers

Steelers wideout Antonio Brown left Sunday's game against the Giants after injuring his left ankle in the first half of their 24-20 win, according to FOX News.?

A non-factor in Sunday's game, Brown had two catches for 19 yards when he left the game.?

Brown has had a heck of a season thus far, leading the team with 40 receptions for 480 yards. Though he only has reached the end zone once in his 2012 campaign.

Head coach Mike Tomlin and company will hope that Brown can get healthy and return to his early-season form without missing any additional time.

Disease is like holding a handful of water Managing Chronic ...

It has become increasingly necessary to draw a sharp distinction between managing chronic disease and managing health, or health-care versus wellness. In health-care as we know it, excluding injuries by accidents or other causes, the primary focus is two-fold. One, to do what I call quasi prevention by having yearly checkups for general health, i.e. mammograms for women, prostate checks for men, checks for cardiovascular or other abnormalities.

Second, is to respond to diagnosed problems. Problems when found might necessitate surgery, medication, or both, usually targeted at a specific condition. That approach primes you for the next series of problems you will likely encounter.

The human body is not like an automobile, where you replace or repair one part and you?re back on the road again. Eventually another component will fail somewhere down the road. To look at it another way, you can replace enough parts that you essentially have a new automobile. Not so with the body.

Once you receive the bad news of heart disease, diabetes or cancer, for instance, then managing chronic disease kicks in, sentencing you to a bevy of drugs for the rest of your life. At this point they are conceding that the drugs they are prescribing won?t cure you, but sustain you, in most cases, in a steadily declining state of health, while other conditions manifest themselves, for which you?ll be prescribed more drugs. Venture to guess where this is heading?

On the other hand wellness takes a completely different approach. Embracing wellness means taking steps to avoid the devastating circular scenario played out above.

While one approach (wellness) will cost you money along the way, the other can very well cost your health, wealth and your life. The wellness route will prolong or prevent entirely the onset of degenerative diseases, as well as provide a much better quality of life in the process. The holistic nature of wellness treats the entire body nutritionally, as it builds, sustains, and fortifies immunity. This means that you are not waiting for the next diseased shoe to drop, you?re being proactive and therefore more equipped to handle a problem should one arise.

Wellness makes sense on the basis of cost alone. It?s cost is spread out over time, and more financially tolerant. Traditional management of disease will not only exhaust your insurance coverage (if you are lucky enough to have it), but also devastate you financially. This not only effects you personally but also your family. It?s the ultimate attack on the well-being of you, your economy and your loved ones. The only real winner here is the medical establishment and drug companies.

Perhaps the best part of the wellness approach is the sense of confidence you have when you know that you have done all that you know every day to fortify your body against disease. You also can stop looking over your shoulder for fear of the next disease.

Anyone can get sick but how your body is able to respond makes all the difference, and can determine your ability to recover. Practicing wellness not only allows you to survive, but also allows you to thrive.

With all the known problems with the environment, chemicals, food, antibiotics and disease, a good wellness plan will ensure that you are taking steps not only to live, but live happy.

Nurses Who Saved NICU Babies Remember Harrowing Hurricane Night

Nurses at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at New York University's Langone Medical Center have challenging jobs, even in the best of times. Their patients are babies, some weighing as little as 2 pounds, who require constant and careful care as they struggle to stay alive.

On Monday night, as superstorm Sandy bore down on Manhattan, the nurses' jobs took on a whole new sense of urgency as failing power forced the hospital's patients, including the NICU nurses' tiny charges, to evacuate.

"20/20" recently reunited seven of those nurses: Claudia Roman, Nicola Zanzotta-Tagle, Margot Condon, Sandra Kyong Bradbury, Beth Largey, Annie Irace and Menchu Sanchez. They described how they managed to do their jobs ? and save the most vulnerable of lives ? under near-impossible circumstances.

On Monday night, as Sandy's wind and rain buffeted the hospital's windows, the nurses were preparing for a shift change and the day nurses had begun to brief the night shift nurses. Suddenly, the hospital was plunged into darkness. The respirators and monitors keeping the infants alive all went silent.

For one brief moment, everyone froze. Then the alarms began to ring as backup batteries kicked in. But the coast wasn't clear ? the nurses were soon horrified to learn that the hospital's generator had failed, and that the East River had risen to start flooding the hospital.

"Everybody ran to a patient to make sure that the babies were fine," Nicola Zanzotto-Tagle recalled. "If you had your phone with a flashlight on the phone, you held it right over the baby."

For now, the four most critical patients ? infants that couldn't breathe on their own ? were being supplied oxygen by battery-powered respirators, but the clock was ticking. They had, at most, just four hours before the machines were at risk of failing.

Annie Irache tended to the most critical baby -- he had had abdominal surgery just the day before ? as an evacuation of 20 NICU babies began.

"[He] was on medications to keep up his blood pressure," Irache said, "and he also had a cardiac defect, so he was our first baby to go."

One by one, each tiny infant, swaddled in blankets and a heating pad, cradled by one nurse and surrounded by at least five others, was carried down nine flights of stairs. Security guards and secretaries pitched in, lighting the way with flashlights and cell phones.

The procession moved slowly. As nurses took their careful steps, they carefully squeezed bags of oxygen into the babies' lungs.

"We literally synchronized our steps going down nine flights," Zanzotto-Tagle said. "I would say 'Step, step, step."

With their adrenaline pumping, the nurses said, it was imperative that they stay focused.

"We're not usually bagging a baby down a stairwell ... n the dark," said Claudia Roman. "I was most worried about, 'Let me not trip on this staircase as I'm carrying someone's precious child, because that would be unforgivable."

When the medical staff and the 20 babies emerged, a line of ambulances was waiting. A video of Margot Condon cradling a tiny baby as she rode a gurney struck a chord worldwide. But Condon said she had a singular goal.

"I was making sure the tube was in place, that the baby was pink," she said. "I was not taking my eyes off that baby or that tube."

Like other nurses, she did not feel panic. Her precious patient helped keep her calm.

PM hosts business forum; addresses national issues

Business Forum held

Almost one year ago the Prime Minister, Dean Barrow held a business forum with the private sector to discuss partnering efforts with the government.? At the same location at Old Belize, the PM met again today with the same group as furtherance to that discussion on the development of Belize?s economy.? One of the itchy topics has been the super bond, which the government has been attempting to re-negotiate with the international lending partners.?

The Prime Minister said that since last year?s forum, the reduction of electricity and water rates is the most notable development.? Electricity rates were cut by six percent and water rates by 7.2 percent.? But perhaps even more significant that that now, at least for people whose lives and business depend heavily on the use of the internet, is that we will soon have broader bandwidth access at much cheaper rates than what is currently charged.?

And crime, being what it is, described by the PM as quote, ?the major domestic issue at this time?, Mr Barrow said that his government whatever it will take to wipe the violence off the city?s streets.

Focus was also given to corruption in the public service, which has, time and again been brought to the fore on the talk shows and the news.?

Following his presentation, Prime Minister Barrow spoke with reporters.? Regarding the call by some sects for the immediate resignation or removal of Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington, for his approach to the Belize/Guatemala territorial dispute, and specifically since the OAS Secretary General, Jose Insulza?s statement that whatever grant made to the family of the Guatemalan farmer killed by the BDF on Belizean land will not be made by the OAS, Mr Barrow sais that it was not Mr Elrington but he that made that decision.? The PM calls the gesture a humanitarian ex-gratia payment.

The citrus industry, also in a plight of its own recently, was also addressed in our conversation with the PM.? That topic he referred to as a complex web of issues.?

Today?s Prime Ministerial forum was held at Old Belize on the George Price Highway.?
