Skiers urged to take out winter sports insurance

Travellers have been advised to take out sports insurance, after it was revealed that the average cost of receiving medical treatment at a number of popular winter sports holiday destinations has risen.

Data from Sainsbury's Bank Travel Insurance shows that the average value of travel insurance claims linked to winter sports injuries at many popular European destinations increased last year.

With claims potentially running into thousands of pounds, David Barrett, Sainsbury's Travel Insurance manager, said the figures highlight the importance of taking out travel insurance that includes cover for winter sport injuries before hitting the slopes.

"These latest figures show the cost of an accident on the slopes can be expensive, and with costs for medical treatment on the increase ? the appropriate winter sports cover, is essential for any trip," he explained.

"Especially when you consider that it will also pick up the bill if you need to be transported to hospital including airlifting you off of the slope, a cost that can be very high for some destinations."
