Oz the Great & Powerful

Director: Sam Raimi
Writers: Mitchell Kapner (screenplay), David Lindsay-Abaire (screenplay), 1 more credit ?
Stars: James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz

This prequel explains the Wizard?s backstory. After an enchanting opening title sequence, a scruffy traveling magician (James Franco, who?s kinda bland) gets blown into a fantastic world of magic and talky witches. Like the Wizard, I wasn?t sure where it was headed. The visual style and EFX are either very stylized or very cheesy. There are some truly magical moments, while others are slow and maudlin. Some of the supporting characters (including a monkey and porcelain girl) are delightful. Children won?t be as picky and will likely be thoroughly enchanted. More demanding grownups may be charmed at times and yawning at others.

GAY ANGLE: Witches in beautiful gowns. If only they sang?L

Dead Man Down

Director: Niels Arden Oplev
Writer: J.H. Wyman (screenplay)
Stars: Colin Farrell, Noomi Rapace, Dominic Cooper

You know when a movie trailer looks one way, but the movie is a whole different thing? Bingo! Colin Farrell broods as he does so well, as a man who?s plotting revenge on the gangsters who killed his wife and daughter. To drag down the plot, we suffer thru an awkward relationship with a damaged woman (Noomi Rapace). While there are three short spurts of action, there?s more than 90 minutes of brooding character drama. Slow, gloomy dialogue. Long, lackluster encounters. It?s really not worth suffering thru it just to see a truck drive into a house.

GAY ANGLE: Farrell is always sexy and leaves his shirt open?once.

Jerry Williams reviewed movies for WTVR-TV for 14 years and for Style Weekly for 10 years. When he launched his own website in 1998 at TVJerry.com, he took his reviews to the Internet. Through those hundreds of reviews, Jerry kept his sexual orientation muted. So, he's excited to be adding "gay angles" to his postings for GayRVA.com.
