Camp looks at strategy - news - nelson-mail | Stuff.co.nz

A new "business boot camp" will allow businesses of any size to develop their strategic planning and leadership skills by spending a weekend in the Marlborough Sounds.

Next month Nelson business mentors Gilbert Robertson and Stephen Smith and adventure racer Nathan Fa'avae will run BizCamp, a two-day course at Furneaux Lodge.

Mr Smith said the camp would differ from other boot-camp-style events, which often focused purely on leadership.

"What we want to do is get them thinking that businesses need running, rather than being left to run, to look at it and think about some better ways to operate it, and teach them how to develop a strategy for running their business."

The camp would also involve planning and running a mini-adventure race with Mr Fa'avae.

"All the time, we're trying to draw some parallels back. The guys who win the race aren't going to be the strong ones or the fit ones. They're going to be the ones who've put in their thinking, who've planned and worked together as a team. What we're hoping is that they'll leave thinking about their business differently."

So far, businesses interested in enrolling in the camp included a locally owned franchise with more than 30 outlets nationally. It was looking at bringing franchise owners in and running a specialist BizCamp for them.

There was also a national co-operative, which might try to encourage its clients to attend by paying half the fees.

The camps will have a maximum of 16 people each, with a minimum of eight.

"We don't want a large crowd of people, because we want to give them some dedicated time," Mr Smith said.

More will be held every six weeks during the winter and according to demand during the summer.

The camp is the latest branch of the business coaching services provided by the duo.

They also run BizBoard, a "virtual board" for businesses which involves six months of mentoring, with communications consultant Emma Thompson, as well as BizStorm, a three-hour "dragons' den" session.
