The UK tennis team moved up to the No. 5 ranking in the ITA after defeating No. 39 LSU and No. 47 Arkansas; it?s the team?s highest ranking since 2004. The Cats are 14-2 and have played seven matches against the top 25, losing only to No. 2?Southern Cal and No. 19 Illinois. UK has beaten three top ten teams? No. 6 Georgia, No.?8 Oklahoma, and No. 10 Mississippi State.
In other good tennis news, former Kentucky men?s tennis coach, Dennis Emery was elected into the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame Class for 2013. He is one of seven voted in this year in his first year of eligibility for the honor. Emery posted 650 career wins, coached three singles finalists, and had 23 NCAA Tourney appearances in 35 years. ?Obviously, we are all excited for Dennis being elected with this prestigious honor,? Mitch Barnhart said. ?Anytime you are elected to any hall of fame, it is special, but it is even more meaningful to be a first-ballot inductee. To put up the numbers he did and put together the body of work in his career is something to treasure and we are excited the ITA choose to honor him.?
Emery, along with?Adolph Rupp, Joe B. Hall, Bear Bryant, and Jerry Claiborne are the only coaches in UK Athletics history to be elected into the hall of fame in their respective sport. That?s some pretty good company there Dennis.
Congrats to Coach Emery and to?the tennis Cats on the new ranking. This program is becoming a force in college tennis, much like Drew and Matt will?soon be in professional tennis?broadcasting.?Kentucky prepares for its visit at No. 38 Baylor Friday, before it takes on No. 14 Texas A&M Sunday.
